It is characterized by its tall and pointed architecture, typical of Hindu architecture, and by the towering 47 m high central building.
Ratu Boko is an archaeological site known as Queen Boko's Palace. The original name of this site is still unclear, probably the site was a palace complex which belonged to the kings of Sailendra or Mataram Kingdom that also built temples scattered across the Prambanan Plain. The oldest ruins were identified as a buddhist temple, and then converted in to hindu temple, and later as a castle. Despite the large quantity and variety of remains found there, an old javanese inscription refers to the constructions of a Buddhist monastery modelled after Abhayagiri Vihara Complex (means a monastery on a peaceful hill) in Sri Lanka, where a group of ascetic forest dwelling monks resided.
