The temple is built at the edge (ulu) of a 70 m high cliff/rock (watu) projecting into the sea. The structure was significantly expanded by a Javanese sage, Empu Kuturan in the 11th Century. Another sage from East Java, Dang Hyang Nirartha is credited for constructing the padmasana shrines and it is said that he attained moksha here. The temple is inhabited by monkeys, who are notorious for snatching visitors' belongings.

Kecak is a form of Balinese dance and music drama that was developed in the 1930s in Bali. Since its creation, it has been performed primarily by men. Also known as the Ramayana Monkey Chant, the piece, performed by a circle of at least 150 performers wearing checked cloth around their waists, percussively chanting "cak" and moving their hands and arms, depicts a battle from the Ramayana.
